This weekend was a legendary one, for me personally, and I think for the other 399 and more people in the Big Building in Groningen too. It was the World’s biggest blockchain hackathon, and the first hackathon I witnessed. More than 50 multidisciplinary teams and 100 coaches - Jedi’s - got together to build a new operational system for our society. Read the full experience here.

"How can you be cold?!" Experiences from a Swede in the Netherlands

Since I moved to the Netherlands, I’ve come across two very common reactions (among many other of course): 1. “You’re cold? But, you’re from Sweden!? How can you be cold?” – This reaction is not exclusive for the Netherlands, but quite international. I find it amusing, since we don’t, after all, although we do come from Sweden, grow fur. 

The second reaction is that there’s a common agreement of how far Sweden has come with matters like the social system, innovation, sustainability, labor conditions etc.

De afgelopen jaren zijn we steeds meer zaken online gaan delen; het begon met muziek, verhalen en foto’s via sociale media. Daarnaast zijn we meer en meer spullen van elkaar gaan kopen via sites als marktplaats. En vandaag dringt de snel opkomende ‘deeleconomie’ in steeds meer sectoren door: we delen onze woning via Airbnb, spullen via Peerby, energie via Vandebron of Powerpeers, kennis via Konnektid, eten via Thuisafgehaald, ritten via Blablacar en auto’s en parkeerplaatsen via platformen als Snappcar, MyWheels en Mobypark. Zo krijgen steeds meer Nederlanders toegang tot elkaars spullen en diensten. Eén op de vijf Nederlanders maakt gebruik van online deelplatformen (inclusief Airbnb en Marktplaats.nl). Voor de opkomst van de online deeleconomie deelden mensen vrijwel uitsluitend eigendommen met vrienden, familie en kennissen. Uit onderzoek komt naar voren dat het percentage Nederlanders dat er geen probleem mee heeft spullen met vreemden te delen in de afgelopen 3 jaar is gestegen van 10% naar ruim 30% . Lees meer...

Onlangs was ik drie dagen in de wildernis. Gebruik maken van minimale spullen. Een spannende, maar heerlijke tijd. Maar dan ga je terug naar je dagelijkse bestaan, terug naar de stad. Ik verwonderde me, walgde zelfs van de stapels met nutteloze spullen die in elke winkel tot het plafond reiken. De afschuw maakte snel plaats voor de realisatie dat ik er niet boven sta, niet beter ben, maar dat ik onderdeel ben van deze overvloed. Er is een mooie manier om deze controverse tussen overvloed en schaarste te benutten en doorbreken: de deeleconomie. Lees meer...

Now, the European Commission released the ‘JRC Science for policy report’, and we summarize the highlights here. For full report, click here. The report emphasizes the importance of acknowledging both opportunities and challenges that this new economy brings and suggests concrete areas and issues that need to be considered in order to foster continued growth of the collaborative economy.

Als geboren en getogen Antwerpse blijf ik een warm hart toe dragen aan de stad. Antwerpen is een bijzondere stad, met veel verborgen schatten. Wat in Amsterdam sneller aan de grote klok wordt gehangen, wordt in Antwerpen discreet mee omgegaan. Het creëert soms een gevoel van een mysterieuze stad ook wel. Een van de verborgen parels van de stad, is het Stadslab2050. Een labo dat in tegenstelling tot het centrale bestuur, veel ruimte heeft voor experiment en open naar de toekomst durft te kijken. Ik twitterde laatst: “Stadslab2050 maakt de Antwerpenaar weer trots”, en dat beaam ik vandaag nog steeds. Ik vond het een verrijking om de deeleconomie mee te verkennen in m’n eigen stad, en vanuit shareNL in Amsterdam een bijdrage te kunnen leveren. Gert vertelt er zelf meer over.

Parkeertarieven voor deelauto’s variëren van gratis tot ruim €1.800 euro per jaar. De Green Deal Autodelen zette de tarieven van 2015 voor een vaste deelauto parkeerplaats op een rij en ontdekte weinig logica. In Leeuwarden Centrum is een deelautovergunning bijvoorbeeld even duur als Amsterdam-Zuid. Almere spant de kroon; een deelautovergunning in een Almeerse buitenwijk is ruim tweemaal zo duur als dezelfde vergunning in het centrum van Amsterdam. As an avid reader of this blog you undoubtedly agree that sharing is awesome. ShareNL's research shows a lot of people are willing to share (84% of all Amsterdam citizens!)... however, the percentage of people that actually share is tiny. And of those sharers, most only share certain items, f.i. a shared car but not a shared house or power drill.

That’s the number of things I own. An obsession of stuff is what kick-started my graduation project at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft. Several bloggers, photographers and artist, such as Peter Menzel and Judith de Leeuw, are questioning whether we are living in a material world. Inspired by them, I decided to count everything I own. With mathematical precision I transformed my home into a photo studio, capturing and counting everything I have. Well, 881 is the answer. It sure seems like a lot. If I would display everything on the floor, it would occupy an area of 120 square meters. The combined volume of these items would be 52 cubic meters. That’s the volume of two vans. Is it really necessary to own so many things? And why do I even want to own more things? At the moment I finished this experiment it was already out-dated, since I bought more stuff. And I want to own even more. In extend to the sheer amount of stuff in our households, it seems we are all having more or less the same things. Could sharing be the solution to this redundancy of things? Can we promote a shared habitat where you live with less while having access to more?  Read more...
